Peranakan Museum and St Andrew's Cathedral

It was a rainy day today in Singapore - one of the first there has been since I've been here.  Typically we can get a little rain every day - for 5-10 minutes at about 5pm, sometimes mixed with a little lightning and thunder.  Today was different, it's pretty much rained all day - still 33 degrees!

I decided to go to the Perankan Museum today - I had the Asian Civilization Museum on my "to do" list but was told that this museum was better.

The Peranakan Chinese are descendants of Chinese traders who settled in areas of southeast Asia - typically Malacca, Java, Sumatra. There are also Peranakan Indians and Jawi Peranakans. The museum is dedicated to these people and their culture and their very beautiful traditions.

I have been hoping to find some Singaporean batik fabric to bring home and they had some in the museum gift shop.  I bought a couple of pieces - apparently the fabric is typically used for sarongs, but can be used for a table cloth or a bathing suit cover or maybe some pillow covers.

On my way back to the MRT station I passed by St Andrew's Cathedral.  St. Andrew's was built in 1835 and is the head of the Anglican Church in Singapore.  It sits on quite a large piece of land (at least large for Singapore) in the Central Business District - even has it's own koi pond.

Lovely stained glass windows.

A couple of things crossed off the to do list!  Leaving Singapore in 12 days!
